In the glitzy and glamorous world of Bollywood, where people are obsessed with perfection and public image, it’s usually the picture-perfect lives of celebrities that come to the forefront. However, what happens behind the surface, the challenges and scrutiny, doesn’t make it to the spotlight. One such similar case was with actress Madhuri Dixit, who is one of the most celebrated actresses of Bollywood. However, even she has faced her share of criticism. Widely regarded as one of the most successful and beloved actors of her generation, she recently reflected on the early struggles of her career, revealing that she, too, was subjected to unsolicited remarks about her looks long before she achieved stardom.
In a recent interview, Madhuri revealed that comments on her appearance were common when she had just started out in the mid-1980s. “A lot of people told me when I had just started, do this, how is your nose, your this, your that. I used to go and say, ‘Mom, they’re saying this.’ And my mom would say, ‘Don’t worry about it. Once you have a successful movie, that’s the very thing they’ll love about you.’”
She admitted that at the time, her mother’s words felt difficult to believe. However, everything changed after the release of Tezaab, which turned her into an overnight sensation.
Reflecting on how people’s perception changed after her success, Madhuri recalled how the unsolicited advice eventually stopped. “After Tezaab, nobody said anything about being skinny or being this or that. People just accepted me for who I am. Even today, I tell the new girls don’t try to be in a mould. Don’t say this is how a heroine should look. If you’re different, that’s a uniqueness you have. Play on that.”
Speaking about her work, Madhuri was recently seen in Mrs. Deshpande, a web series directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, where she plays a serial killer. The show is currently streaming on JioHotstar. Speaking about embracing darker roles, the actor shared that she was grateful for opportunities that allow her to explore different characters at this stage of her career.
From facing criticism about her looks to redefining stardom on her own terms, Madhuri Dixit’s journey speaks about self belief and confidence.
