Mahanati is based on the life and times of one of the most successful South Indian heroines Savitri. She was married to Gemini Ganesan and the film chronicles her rise and fall in films. In a recent interview, the lead actress Keerthy Suresh, who plays the titular role, revealed that the film is a non-fictional account of the great actress’ life. She also revealed that she was skeptical about playing Savitri on screen.

“At first, I was extremely skeptical about whether I could portray the life of such a legendary actress on screen successfully. The film also wanted to throw some light on the negative sides of her life, so I was afraid whether it would hurt a section of the people. It was only Nagi (Nag Ashwin, director) who convinced me saying that this film would be an account of Savitri’s life, and there would not be any fictional airs to it,” she revealed.

Mahanati is set for a May 9 release date.
