There are exciting times ahead for Telugu movie buffs! Some of the biggest projects are lined up for release in the upcoming months. While Prabhas’ Saaho will only come out next year, there is great buzz around the movie already. Talking about 2017 itself; we have Mahesh Babu’s SPYder (September 27), Naga Chaitanya’s Yuddham Sharanam (August 2017) and Dhanush’s VIP 2 all waiting to hit screens.
Apart from being Telugu projects, starring some of the biggest names in the Telugu film industry, there is something else that’s common between all these four projects. The anti-heroes! All these four films will see Telugu superstars lock horns with villians who are new names and faces in Tollywood. Neil Nitin Mukesh in Saaho, Bharath in SPYder and Kajol in VIP 2 – we haven’t seen these actors work in Telugu films earlier to this. In case of Yuddham Sharanam, this is not Srikanth’s first Telugu film as he has been sparingly seen in some. But this is first as a villain. So either these faces are new or are doing a never seen before role in these upcoming projects. For those who haven’t spotted the similarity already, here’s a detailed breakup further below. Talking about what has triggered this new trend in Telugu cinema, senior journalist and film critic Latha Srinivasan opined, “The world is becoming a smaller place and filmmakers want to reach out to a wider audience. In this bid, they are casting actors from other industries to create a Pan Indian appeal for their films.” It is true that fan following for Indian celebrities is transcending geographical boundaries. And that is one of the major reasons behind this trend in these said Telugu films.
But, this is just one. Trade analyst Komal Nahta is of the opinion that the move is sparked by the fact that the faces are now recognizable across the country since most of the films are dubbed in various languages. So appealing to a larger audience becomes possible for these films. “The world is shrinking since the availability of content in various languages on different mediums is increasing its reach. That said, there are only a few set kinds of stories that you can tell. In such scenario, even a done to death idea can get a fresh boost when complemented with a fresh face,” said Nahta further adding, “When you want to create something fresh, you can either bring newness of narration, or presentation or fresh faces.” We couldn’t agree more.
Prabhas’ Saaho has Neil Nitin Mukesh playing villain in the film. The actor has played negative roles in Players (2012), Kaththi (2015 – Tamil film), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015), Wazir (2016) and the more recent Indu Sarkar (2017). Mahesh Babu’s SPYder has Bharath playing the villain and the film is again the actor’s first Telugu project. Earlier to this, Bharath played a villain in Tamil film Chellamae (2004).
Naga Chaitanya’s Yuddham Sharanam stars Srikanth as the antagonist and while this will be his sixth Telugu film, this is the first time he has turned a villain.
Dhanush’s VIP 2 stars Kajol as the anti hero. Now, this is not the first time we will see Kajol play a role with grey shade. She has done this earlier in Gupt (1997) and Dilwale (2015). However, this is her first Telugu project and marks her return to Tamil film industry after 10 years since Minsara Kanavu (2007). It is interesting to see how Telugu filmmakers have given us one casting coup after the other to stay excited. Let’s hope the trend continues and we get to see talent, from other film industries, which we may have otherwise missed.
