The story shows how Charles escapes from India’s most securely guarded prison and is then subsequently arrested once again in Goa.Directed by Prawaal Raman, Main Aur Charles gives an insight into the dangerous mind of Charles Sobhraj, how he decieved people around him and used them for his evil motives.
Sobhraj, better known as ‘the Serpent’ and ‘the Bikini Killer’, was accused of murdering dozens of unsuspecting travellers on the hippie trail through India, Thailand and Nepal in the 1970s. He was known for drugging, looting and then killing his victims. When the charming killer, who is a master of deception escaped from the prison in Delhi in broad daylight by poisoning his inmates and security guards, he gained much admiration across the country.
The movie posters and trailer created much excitement as to what the story would be like. Yes, the movie is an entertaining crime thriller, however, Randeep Hooda as Charles does justice to the role but not completely. His fake Indian-Vietnamese accent gets some what irritating after a point. Richa Chadda and Tisca Chopra don’t have a lot to do in the movie until the first half of the movie. Given the list of his criminal activities especially the jail break in 1986 and considering the fact that Sobhraj’s case is one of the most interesting and intriguing stories in the history of India, Main Aur Charles is worth a watch.
