Omung Kumar, who made his directorial debut with the 2014 biographical sports drama Mary Kom starring Priyanka Chopra, will be returning to the North-East (Manipur) for his next, Yubi Lakpi, a film on rugby. Talking about the film, in a statement to Mumbai Mirror, he said, “I’ve been writing this film for the past two years. It’s on rugby, a game that has its origin in Manipur where it was played with a coconut for centuries. We will start the film in Manipur and after the interval move to London. We will also be shooting in Mauritius.” Also Read - Priyanka Chopra Jonas' Blink-And-Miss Appearance in Teaser of Netflix' Movie We Can Be Heroes

Kumar further added that Manipur was not a planned move, the story just came along. The filmmaker plans to roll early next year. “We have five writers on the project—one is from Manipur, another from Australia, two from Mumbai, and me,” he said. Reportedly the film focuses on rugby entirely. Kumar’s debut film was about one woman – a Bollywood biopic of star Indian boxer MC Mary Kom, while this film will focus on a team. Explaining further, he added, “Rugby is still an alien sport for most Indians. Few know about the rugby competition for the Calcutta Cup that was launched in India but is now played between England and Scotland. The film will touch on this and other incidents that are a part of the sport’s history.” ALSO READ: Omung Kumar: An Actor’s Best Role For Life Is What My Films Are – Exclusive

The film is being bankrolled by Sandeep Singh. He told the leading tabloid that in some scenes Mauritius will pass off as Manipur. Singh said, “The film will be largely shot in Mauritius and UK with a few portions set in Manipur because shooting in the state is difficult,” further adding that he is confident that Omung, who specialises in sports-dramas, will do justice to this one too.
