Today, we’re looking back at the journey of a Tamil cinema icon who, at one point was seen as a strong contender to none other than Rajinikanth, Kamal Hasan. Long before the term pan-India star became popular, he had already earned nationwide stardom with a loyal fan following across the country. But just when his career was soaring, an accident led him to step away from the silver screen.
He is none other than Arvind Swamy. He made his debut in Mani Ratnam’s Thalapathi, where he played a character inspired by Mahabharat’s Arjun. Following that, he starred in two massive hits Ratnam – Roja in 1992 and Bombay in 1995. After that, his career boosted when he starred in the 1997 National Award-winning film Minsaara Kanavu alongside Kajol. The following year he made his debut with Juhi Chawla in Saat Rang Ke Sapne. By now, he was regarded the next big superstar in Tamil cinema.

While everything was going hunky dory, Arvind faced a serious of professional setbacks in his career, when his films were failing at the box office. Few of his projects, including a Mahesh Bhatt directorial opposite Aishwarya Rai and Anupam Kher’s planned directorial debut with Amitabh Bachchan were shelved. Then disheartened by few professional hiccups, Arvind distanced himself from films following 2000 and focused on managing his father’s business. In 2005, he suffered a terrible incident, which led to partial paralysis in his leg and was bedridden for 4-5 years.
In 2005, just before his injury, Swamy founded Talent Maximus, a company engaged in payroll processing and temporary staffing in India. According to several market tracking portals, the company’s revenue was a staggering $418 million (Rs 3300 crore). Swamy continues to contribute in the operations of the company.
In 2013, Arvind was persuaded by his mentor Mani Ratnam to make a comeback in films with his project Kadal. The actor eventually began doing selective roles in his second innings. In 2021, he made a comeback in Bollywood opposite Kangana Ranaut in the Tamil-Hindi bilingual Thalaivii. Besides, he also made a directorial debut in one of the stories of the Netflix anthology Navarasa in the following year.
