There have been several superstars in Indian cinema during the past 100 years. Bollywood’s biggest stars don’t even have 100 hits. Shah Rukh and Salman both have somewhere in 30s, whereas Amitabh Bachchan has 56 and Rajesh Khanna has 42. Not even the biggest actors in the South, like Rajinikanth and Prabhas, have amassed more than a hundred hits over their careers. In actuality, even when we pool the hits that these superstars have contributed, they still fall short of what this actor has contributed. None of the top celebs could top this one celebrity who has acted in more than 900 movies and has the distinction of having penned 50 blockbusters and 400 hits.

A generation of Malayalam filmgoers saw Prem Nazir, the genre’s first celebrity as the quintessential romantic hero. His expertise and humanity continue to be the talk of the town, as he defines the archetype of the hero.

Being from Chirayinkeezh in Thiruvananthapuram district, the actor achieved great success in Indian film. Born Abdul Khader, Prem Nazir made his feature debut in the 1952 film Marumakal. He used the stage name Prem Nazir for his second film, Visappintr Vili. Films like Murappennu, Udhyogastha, Iruttinte Athmavu, Kallichellamma, Virunnukari, Nadhi, C.I.D. Nazir, Anubhavangal Paalichakal, Taxi Car, Azhakulla Saleena, Nellu, Ariyappedatha Rahasyam, and others are among the ones for which Prem Nazir is well-known.

Prem Nazir developed a devoted fan base and assumed the persona of a romantic hero. He emerged as Malayalam cinema’s first true superstar in the early 1950s. He has two Guinness World Records – one for performing alongside Sheela in more than 100 films, and another for having the main part in a record 524 films (501 in Malayalam and 23 in Tamil). He has appeared in over 74 B. Sasikumar films as an actor.

Prem Nazir remained a superstar until the early 1980s, despite his inability to recover after the mid-1970s. 39 of his pictures were released in 1979, setting a record. In addition, he holds the record for most leading roles played, with around 700 films (and an additional 85 heroines). Prem Nazir transitioned to supporting roles by the 1980s. Even in his fifties, he was still able to produce successes, such as Padayottam (1982). After getting measles in 1989, Prem Nazir passed away.
