Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan’s chemistry is widely loved by the audience. One of the iconic films they did together was Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. However, did you know that Kajol was once offered a role opposite Shah Rukh Khan, which she turned down? Yes, you read that right! In an interview, filmmaker Mansoor Khan, known for his collaborations with his cousin Aamir Khan on hit films like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, opened up about the making of Shah Rukh Khan’s film Josh.
The filmmaker revealed that initially, he considered Kajol to portray Shah Rukh Khan’s sister. However, she refused the part. Eventually, another famous actress was cast in the role – Aishwarya Rai. Aishwarya was paired opposite Shah Rukh Khan, playing the role of his sister.
Mansoor recalled, “I narrated the film to Kajol because I wanted her to play the sister. After Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, this was the ultimate sacrilege. After hearing the story, she got up and was about to leave my house. I asked, ‘Kajol, are you doing the film?’ She said, ‘No, I want to play Max.’ Then she walked out.”
It was at this point that he approached Aishwarya Rai. The filmmaker added, “I was worried that no one wanted to play Max’s sister, but luckily, Aishwarya agreed to do the film. She was a thorough professional. She never complained, never asked where the camera should be… I think, personally, Josh was her best film.”
Mansoor continued, “My thought was that both characters were equally important… I always had Shah Rukh in mind for Max’s role. I was also intending to cast Aamir in Chandrachur Singh’s role. When I told Aamir the story, he assumed he was playing Max.”
Interestingly, not many know that even Shah Rukh Khan initially turned down the offer to be a part of the film, as he believed that Aamir Khan would play the role of Max.
Mansoor Khan stepped away from the film industry in 2003 to pursue farming in Coonoor. He later made a brief return to contribute to Imran Khan’s debut film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Currently, he is involved in the production of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s second film.
