In the era of the 70s, as the magic of actresses such as Asha Parekh, Vyjayanthimala, and Saira Banu began to wane, a new generation of young actresses was stepping forward in the Bollywood industry. Beautiful heroines like Hema Malini, Rekha, Mumtaz, and others were captivating audiences and making waves in theatres. Among them was a 20-year-old who turned heads and won the hearts of audiences with her performances. Soon, she was recognized as the replacement for Madhubala. Despite receiving abundant praise and working alongside A-list actors, this actress’s fate had other plans. Surprisingly, she left Bollywood at the pinnacle of her success and even suffered personal loss.
If you’re wondering who we are talking about, it’s actress Leena Chandavarkar. Born to a Konkani Marathi-speaking Army officer in Dharwad, Karnataka, in 1950, Leena rose to fame in the late 60s and early 70s. She made her Bollywood debut in 1968 with the film Man Ka Meet, produced by Sunil Dutt and featuring Vinod Khanna in the lead role. This role brought her immense success, catapulting her to overnight stardom in Bollywood. However, did you know that Leena’s intended debut was with the film Maseeha? Unfortunately, the film was shelved until 1969.
As Leena Chandavarkar began her career, she worked with all the A-list actors, including Rajesh Khanna in Mahboob Ki Mehndi, Dilip Kumar in Bairaag, and Jeetendra in Humjoli.
When Leena was at the top of her game, she met Siddharth Bandodkar, who came from a political family. The couple fell in love and decided to tie the knot. At the age of 24, Leena married Siddharth. For those who may not know, Siddharth’s father was the first Chief Minister of Goa.
While Leena might have envisioned a life filled with beautiful adventures, fate had other plans that brought her sorrow. Tragically, just 11 days after their wedding, her husband passed away. Siddharth was cleaning his gun when it accidentally discharged, claiming his life. After her husband’s death, she returned home, only to face blame and taunts from her family, who held her responsible for his demise.
Leena made a comeback with Dilip Kumar’s Bairaag, but the film flopped. In 1980, she starred in Pyar Ajnabi Hai alongside Kishore Kumar, and the actress began to develop feelings for him.
Leena’s family did not support her marriage to Kishore Kumar. Before marrying Leena, Kishore had three failed marriages and was also 20 years older than her. Despite the family’s opposition, Kishore pleaded to be with her. Eventually, it was revealed that Leena was pregnant. When they married, she was seven months along. Today, Leena is 74 years old.
