Vijayta Pandit, became an overnight sensation with the 1981 film Love Story. Helmed by Rahul Rawail, the film launched Rajendra Kumar’s son Kumar Gaurav alongside Pandit. The film was a blockbuster and its songs with her mega-hits. Through the early and mid-80s, Vijayta and Kumar Gaurav were considered the brightest young stars of Hindi cinema.
During that era, Vijayta became a brightest young heroine and gave a tough competition to Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. However, her well-established career ruined after some time, and she suddenly disappeared from films.
While shooting Love Story, Vijayta and Kumar Gaurav fell in love. But his father, Rajendra Kumar was against their relationship as he wanted his son to focus on his career. In a conversation with Lehren Retro, Vijayta accused Rajendra Kumar for jeopardising her career.
“He used to get very angry, and I could guess that. He used to scold Bunty (Kumar Gaurav) and told him to focus on work. You should not fall in love with this girl. You are my prince. I will get a princess for you. I will get you married off to a rich girl from a good family, he used to say. I would get scared.” She said.
Vijayta said that even though Kumar Gaurav fought for their relationship, but their separation was ought to happen because of his father. She also revealed how Rajendra Kumar made sure that her career gets destroyed. “I was willing to work. I was approached for many films. I even shot for a film called Rahee for 10 days. After that, Rajendra ji got me removed from all the films. He never let me work with him. He suggested Poonam Dhillon, Rati Agnihotri, and others. All those films were disasters. Rajendra Kumar ruined his son’s career and mine,” Vijayta said.
In 1985, Vijayta made a comeback with Mohabbat. But following that, all her films flopped at the box office. In 1986, she tied the knot with filmmaker Sameer Malkan. But the marriage could not last long. In 1990, she left acting after her marriage with composer Aadesh Shrivastava. She then became a playback singer and composed few songs in films like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Dev, and Chingaari.
