Some actors become household names not just for their performances, but for taking on roles that challenge norms and spark conversations. While names like Sridevi and Rekha often come up in such discussions, one particular actress also made a mark with two bold films that generated strong audience reactions, one became a blockbuster, while the other struggled at the box office. Her journey through these contrasting successes shows the unpredictable path of stardom in Indian cinema.
The actress at the centre of this story is Madhuri Dixit, one of the most celebrated performers in Hindi cinema. In a career filled with memorable roles, she also took on parts that were ahead of their time and stirred both praise and debate. One such example is the 1988 action drama Dayavan, in which she starred opposite Vinod Khanna.
Directed by legendary, late Feroz Khan and inspired by the life of underworld figure Varadarajan Mudaliar, Dayavan was notable for its gritty tone, stylish presentation, and Madhuri’s confident portrayal, it did not work in terms of box office. Made on a budget of Rs 2 crore, it earned only Rs 4 crore and became one of 1988’s biggest flops.

During the filming of the romantic song “Aaj Phir Tumpe Pyar Aaya Hai,” the movie became the subject of controversy. Reports claim that Vinod Khanna, who was significantly older than the then 20‑year‑old Madhuri Dixit, continued a kissing scene even after the director called “cut.” Allegedly, he bit her lip during the scene, causing it to bleed. The incident reportedly left Madhuri visibly upset and in tears on set, highlighting the challenges actors faced during daring scenes at the time.
In contrast, Madhuri’s performance in the 1991 romantic drama Dil, helmed by Indra Kumar, opposite Aamir Khan, was an unquestionable hit. Blending romance, comedy, and family sentiment, Dil connected deeply with viewers. The film’s music, on‑screen chemistry, and emotional storyline made it a favourite across age groups. At the box office, Dil was a blockbuster hit, earning approximately Rs 17 crore gross worldwide, with around Rs 12 crore from India and Rs 5 crore from overseas, becoming the highest-grossing film of that year.

Unlike Dayavan, Dil offered audiences a more traditional romantic narrative, yet it also included scenes that were bold for its time, particularly in portraying mutual attraction and emotional vulnerability with a freshness that resonated with youth.
