Several actors come and go and but few stay for their names to be etched for generations. Among those gems was a leading lady who ruled the 70s-80s decade and was ranked amongst the highly paid ones. She not only acted with some of the established actors at that time, but also had a rivalry with one her peers which she regretted later. However, one controversy, one decision changed her life forever.
The actress in focus hails from Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh. She was trained in dance and music at early stage of life. Reportedly, her dancing talent was recognised by a film director during one of her school functions. Eventually, she starred getting quality projects and turned into a big star in the Telegu industry before stepping in Hindi cinema. Her name is Jaya Prada.
Born as Lalitha Rani Rao, Jaya Prada made her film debut in 1974 with a brief dance number. After establishing her herself, she earned several accolades and critical acclaim. After starring in Hindi movies, she gained recognition and her pairing with Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra was widely appreciated.
Jaya Prada was counted among the top actresses of that era and some her hits include- ‘Sargam’, ‘Maa’, ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani’, ‘Toofan’, ‘Swarg Se Sundar’, ‘Sanjog’, ‘Muddat’, ‘Sindoor’, ‘Jabardast’, ‘Zakhmi’, ‘Ganga Tere Desh Mein’, ‘Kaamchor’.
Sridevi and Jaya Prada were most renowned actress of their time. Both were launched to stardom after being well established in South cinema. Both of them had worked together in few films together but their cold war was a documented anecdote in the industry. Reportedly, their rift began due to a film titled ‘Nagina’. The word has it that the script was offered to Jaya first but she was replaced by Sridevi. The angered the former and dispute arose between them.
In a chat show, It was revealed by Jaya Prada that how actor Jeetendra, during the shoot of ‘Maqsad’, once attempted to resolve the difference by locking the two actresses in a room. However, the plan did not pan out as expected because both actresses were unyielding and sat with their backs facing each other.
It is said that after almost 25 yeas, ‘Sharaabi’ actress extended an olive-branch and invited Sridevi to her son’s wedding.
A Love Affair
Jaya Prada was one of the many leading ladies in the film industry. She was once the top actress but reportedly her fate in love was unrequited.
Rumours were rife that Jaya Prada had secretly married a film producer Srikant Nahata who rescued her when she was under the radar of Income Tax Department. The producer was married and had children. A controversy was stirred when their marriage rumours were all over the news and Nahata hadn’t separated from his wife.
Later, Jaya Prada quit the industry at the peak of her career and decided to venture into politics. She joined the Telugu Desam Paty (TDP) in 1994 and later became the Member of Parliament.
