Esha Deol is a name that’s synonymous with talent and elegance in Bollywood. Known for her captivating performances and undeniable charm, she carved out her own niche in the industry starting with her debut film, Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe in 2002. However, her journey was not without its challenges. In the early 2010s, the actress found herself battling damaging rumours that threatened to overshadow her career. False reports surfaced claiming she was a drug addict, and these allegations took a serious emotional toll on her. It wasn’t until her mother, Hema Malini’s biography, Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl, that Esha decided to open up about how deeply these rumours affected her.
The rumours about Esha experimenting with drugs left her heartbroken and shaken. Reports even went so far as to suggest that the actress was on the verge of entering rehab. In her mother’s biography, Esha shared the emotional distress she faced, revealing how the false accusations deeply hurt her. She confessed that she had always been strongly against drugs and was so affected by the rumours that she even offered to undergo a blood test to clear her name in front of her mother.
“I would like to say that I am dead against drugs and have never touched it,” Esha said, recalling how devastated she felt when the rumours circulated. “When that article came out, I was so depressed and hurt that I told my mom she could get my blood test done to check.”
Esha was quick to clarify that while she did enjoy partying and having a drink, she never crossed any boundaries that would have jeopardised her family’s reputation. She explained that having fun with friends was a natural part of her age and lifestyle, but she was adamant that drugs were never a part of the equation. “I would have never done anything that would put my parents to shame,” she said. “Yes, I would party, I would have a few drinks with my friends, I had my share of fun and why not? That was the right age and time. At that age, everyone parties and drinks; the only issue was that I was in the public eye.”
Esha also opened up about the immense pressure she faced after her debut film, especially when comparisons were drawn between her and her legendary mother, Hema Malini. The overwhelming expectations, coupled with critiques of her weight and appearance, left Esha feeling as though she was under constant scrutiny. “The pressure pump started after the films were released and things were written. Then I was like, they are comparing me in my first film to my mother, who has done 200 films,” she shared.
Despite the challenges, Esha stood her ground and continued to pursue her career with grace. She was also subjected to body-shaming, with many commenting on her “baby fat” and “chubby cheeks,” which she had initially embraced, thinking they added to her charm and suited her roles.
Esha Deol’s honesty about the difficulties she faced, from false rumours to body shaming and comparisons with her mother, showcases her resilience and strength. Her journey is a testament to how difficult the industry can be for newcomers, and how important it is to stand firm in the face of unfounded allegations and public scrutiny.
