Indian cinema is known for catapulting stars to glory and then, at times, pulling them down with equal force. Shweta Basu Prasad was one such name.
She burst onto the big screen in 2002 with Vishal Bhardwaj’s Makdee. Playing dual roles at just 11, her acting prowess earned her the National Award for Best Child Artist. Soon after, she won hearts again as Khadija in Iqbal, where her restrained performance drew praise.
Her career expanded into television with appearances in popular serials like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. Later, she moved to South cinema, making a mark with films like Kotha Bangaru Lokam. Back then, everyone believed she was destined for superstardom.
What went wrong in her career?
The year 2014 marked a turning point, but not for the right reasons. Shweta’s name suddenly flashed across headlines when she was arrested from a Hyderabad five-star hotel in a high-profile sex racket case.
Reports claimed she was found with two businessmen and had admitted to police that financial troubles drove her into the trade. The controversy spread like wildfire, staining her image overnight.
However, later investigations revealed she was wrongly implicated. Once the racket’s mastermind was caught, all charges against Shweta were dismissed. She clarified that she never confessed to such allegations and was in Hyderabad only to attend the Santosham Awards.
How did her personal life unfold?
The scandal left her shaken. At just 23, she even spent two months in judicial custody. The shadow of that case continued to haunt her career, pushing her away from the mainstream.
In 2018, she tried finding stability in her personal life by marrying filmmaker Rohit Mittal. But the marriage ended within a year, in 2019. Shweta later shared that though separated, they remained on good terms as friends.
Shweta’s comeback?
Despite setbacks, Shweta refused to fade into obscurity. She slowly carved a niche on digital platforms, a space where many actors have found second chances.
She appeared in projects like India Lockdown and Tribhuwan Mishra: CA Topper, earning appreciation for her maturity as a performer. Most recently, she was seen in Criminal Justice’s latest season, where her role reminded audiences of the powerhouse she once promised to be.
Why does her story resonate?
Shweta’s journey mirrors the brutal unpredictability of Bollywood — from the dizzying heights of child stardom to the crushing lows of controversy. Yet, her refusal to give up defines her resilience.
Her story stands as a reminder: in an industry quick to worship and equally quick to discard, comebacks are possible — if one has the grit to face storms head-on.
