Yesteryear actress Aruna Irani has been the part of Hindi film industry for over six decades. She was once one of the most sought-after Bollywood divas, initially renowned for her portrayal of negative characters. She started her acting career as a child artist with 1971 film Caravan. Later, she rose to fame with films like Farz, Bobby, Sargam, Love Story, Rocky and a few others.
Well, the actress who made a name for herself in the industry, dominated headlines for her off-screen reasons just as for her on-screen avatar. Reportedly, her name was linked with two married stars during the early stages of her career.
When Aruna was a newbie in the industry, nobody was willing to sign her for films. However, actor-filmmaker Mehmood was the only person who gave her work. She called him a “God-sent angel” and shared that because of him she was able to afford a better lifestyle. Talking about her relationship, she confessed that she had feelings for Mehmood despite knowing that he was married. Moreover, the rumours about their marriage also surfaced in the media. Well, Mehmood chose to remain silent about it and never responded. As a result, people believed the rumour was true, and Aruna’s career came to a halt.
Aruna Irani got married to Kuku Kohli in 1990. Interestingly, when the couple tied the knot, Kuku was already married. After marrying him, she did not publicly reveal that were a married couple, as he was already married to his first wife. She stated, “My affair, my relationship with Kuku Kohli was not there to hurt anybody or snatch away somebody.” After the demise of her first wife Rita, the couple started to get public with their marriage.
Arun Irani and Mumtaz started their careers as child artists and later went on to share their screen space in films like Bandhan, Talaa and Patthar Ke Sanam. Naturally, the two actresses became close and developed an organic friendship off-screen.
Aruna once recalled that she used to borrow clothes from ‘Mumu’, who she used to call Mumtaz without any hesitation. During a conversation with Zoom, the 77-year-old actress recalled, “I had a very close bond with Mumtaz. She used to give me her old clothes. She would bring her old clothes from home and tell me, ‘Tu yeh lekar jaana (Take these).’ I used to alter the hand-me-downs as per my size and wear them. She was very good!.”
