The Kapoor family is regarded as the first family of Indian cinema, with its roots tracking back to the legendary actor Prithviraj Kapoor. The second generation, including Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor, played a massive role in shaping the Hindi film industry with their tremendous filmographies and performances. Raj Kapoor, the eldest son of Prithviraj Kapoor, even earned the title of ‘The Greatest Showman of Indian cinema.’
The legendary actor and producer, Raj Kapoor got married to Krishna Raj Kapoor, and welcomed five children, Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor, Ritu Nanda and Reema Jain. While all three boys stepped their foot in the film industry, the girls Ritu and Reema preferred to stay away from the glamour world. It goes without saying that Rishi Kapoor had a proficient career in the Hindi cinema, but Rajiv and Randhir couldn’t match his level of success.
Randhir Kapoor starred in several hit films such as Haath Ki Safai (1974), Chacha Bhatija (1977), Rampur Ka Lakshman(1972), Jawani Diwani (1972), Kal Aaj Aur Kal (1971), Hamrahi (1974), Ram Bharose (1977), Mama Bhanja (1977), Biwi-o-Biwi (1981), and more. While the actor had the potential to be as successful as his brother Chintu, but unfortunately that never happened.
Despite being part of numerous successful films, one thing Randhir lacked was versatility. While he enjoyed success with its romantic roles, he never explored other dimensions of his acting. At one point, people weren’t left excited to see him on-screen, as he used to portray the same foodie character with a snappy sense of humour. According to critics, Randhir never tried picking other variety of roles and stuck to same portrayal of happy-go-lucky guy. After few flops, Randhir decided to take a break from acting and chose to step in the field of direction and production.
On the personal front, Randhir Kapoor got married to actress Babita on November 6, 1971. The couple was blessed with two daughters, actresses Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. However, after few years of marriage, the couple started witnessing a series of differences in their relationship. One major reason was Randhir Kapoor’s drinking habit, which not only affected his health but also his marital life. Once in an interview with the Hindustan Times, Randhir stated, “She found that I was a terrible man who drank a lot and came home late, which was something she didn’t like. And I didn’t want to live the way she wanted, and she couldn’t accept me as I am, though it was a love marriage. So it’s okay.”
After living apart for almost over three decades, Babita moved to Randhir’s house in 2023. Everything seems good in the hood for the couple, as they are experiencing one of the most sought-after phases of their lives.
