Kunal Kamra is one of India’s most well-known and controversial stand-up comedians. His sharp political satire often targets hyper-nationalism, the government, and various political figures, which has frequently landed him in trouble. Even his own audience, who pay to watch him, aren’t spared from his witty jabs. While his fans understand and appreciate his humour, his statements can sometimes be so absurd that they make people uncomfortable. Recently, he made headlines for a joke about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Born on 3rd October 1988 in Mumbai, Kamra studied Commerce at Jai Hind College. However, he dropped out and began working as a production assistant at Corcoise Films, an ad film production house run by Prasoon Pandey. After spending 11 years there, he made his stand-up comedy debut in 2013 at the renowned Canvas Laugh Club in Mumbai.
In 2017, Kamra launched a political comedy podcast called Shut Up Ya Kunal alongside Ramit Verma. The show features politicians and activists from different ideologies, discussing important national issues in a humorous yet thought-provoking manner.
One of his biggest controversies came in 2020 when he clashed with journalist Arnab Goswami during an IndiGo flight. Kamra confronted Goswami over his coverage of Rohith Vemula’s suicide, recording the encounter and later posting it on social media. As a result, IndiGo banned him from flying for six months, followed by similar bans from Air India, SpiceJet, and GoAir. Kamra issued a legal notice to IndiGo against the travel ban demanding a compensation of Rs 25 lakh.
Comedian Kunal Kamra once again landed in controversy after making a joke about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a recent stand-up show. His remarks about Shinde switching political sides sparked outrage, with Shiv Sena leaders reacting strongly. As the clip from Kamra’s Naya Bharat show went viral, Shiv Sena workers vandalised the venue, a Mumbai hotel where the show was recorded. A police complaint has also been filed against Kamra. The complaint also names Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders Sanjay Raut and Aditya Thackeray, along with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
During the performance, Kamra joked about Shinde’s split from Shiv Sena to join forces with the BJP. Without directly naming him, Kamra sang a parody of Dil To Pagal Hai, referring to “a leader from Thane” and making comments about Shinde’s appearance and his political relationship with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
