Late actress Sridevi commenced her career with Tamil and Telegu films and soon established herself as a prominent figure in south. ‘Mr India’ actress has worked several south stars including one actress who worked in about 450 film in career spanning 17 years.

This actress was a prominent name in Telegu and Tamil cinema where she regarded for bold characters. She began her journey with small characters and became popular for playing erotic roles. She assumed a screen name based on the character of her first break though movie. Her name is Vadlapati Vijayalakshmi, aka, Silk Smitha.

Sridevi made it big in South before taking over Bollywood with her versatility and beauty. Sridevi and Silk Smitha came together for only one Hindi film together and that was ‘Sadma.’ Released  in 1983, Sridevi was cast opposite Kamal Haasan and Smith shared screen presence with him in one song only.’Sadma’ a family drama, did not become a box office success as expected to be. But today, it is called a ‘cult classic’. There are several movies that may have been box office failures but made huge success in the hearts of its audience.

There was one song in the film that is hummed till date. ‘Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le’ by Suresh Wadkar. Apart from the song, the storyline and performance of the cast garnered it critical appreciation. It is regarded as a major breakthrough number for Sridevi catapulting her into in Hindi films. This 1983 release is actually the remake of Sridevi’s Tamil film Mundram Pirai. Haasan and Sridevi essayed the same character in the original storyline as well. The film was directed by Balanathan Benjamin Mahendra and won three Filmfare Awards, is considered a milestone in the career of Sridevi and Kamal Haasan.
