India’s first female superstar Sridevi was a phenomena in herself. With her beauty, grace and remarkable versatility, she left an indelible mark in the industry. Among her countless admirers, one name stood out is the legendary actor and her co-star Rajinikanth. According to reports, Rajinikanth was madly in love with Sridevi, but never confessed his feelings due to unexpected turn of events. Despite their great friendship and on-screen chemistry, their love story couldn’t reach to its final conclusion.
The duo first shared screen-space together in 1976 Tamil romantic thriller film, Moondru Mudichu, directed by K. Balachander. At that time, Sridevi was only 13 and played the role of Rajinikanth’s step mother. Following that, they worked together in 19 films across multiple languages. Some of their most notable projects include 16 Vayathinile, Johnny, and Pandiyan.
According to reports, Rajinikanth gradually fell in love with Sridevi and once expressed his desire to her mother to marry the actress. In an old interview, filmmaker, K. Balachander once revealed that Rajinikanth was so serious that he went to her home to propose her. But as he arrived at Sridevi’s home during a housewarming ceremony, the electricity suddenly went out. Being quite superstitious, Rajinikanth considered this as a bad omen and left without confessing his love. Eventually, Sridevi went on to marry producer, Boney Kapoor in 1996.
Sridevi, too, deeply cared for Rajinikanth. There were reports that when the Thalaiva went ill during the filming of Rana, she fasted for seven days and prayed for his recovery. Although, their lives took a different path, but their love and respect for each other stayed for their entire lives.
