Sonam Khan, also known as Sonam, was a promising name in the Hindi film industry during the 90s. Born as Bakhtawar Khan, she made her acting debut in 1987 with a Telugu film called Samrat. Later, Sonam was launched by Yash Chopra, marking her Bollywood debut with film Vijay. Apparently, after that, she changed her name to ‘Sonam’ on Yash Chopra’s suggestion.

Eventually, Sonam became a prominent actress and worked with many A-listers including Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Nasseruddin Shah, and others. She starred in over 30 movies, her notable projects include Tridev, Kroadh, Kodama Simham, Ajooba, Fateh, and Vishwatma.

Sonam even appeared in South Indian cinema, appearing in films like Mugguru Kodukulu with Telugu superstar Krishna and Kodama Simham with Mohan Babu and Chiranjeevi, captivating Telugu audience with her impeccable performances. She quicky rose to stardom but unfortunately couldn’t overcome the obstacles that come her way.

In a surprising turn of events, Sonam married Rajiv Rai, son of Gulshan Rai in 1991, and decided to leave the country, marking the end of her acting career. Just as she was at the peak of her fame, she chose to quit the film industry, after getting married to Rajiv, who was 17 years her senior. Shortly after marriage, speculations circulated about her alleged association with underworld don Abu Saleml, urging her to step away from the glamorous world.

After leaving India, Sonam moved to various countries over the next 15 years. Her sudden departure from films soon became the subject of interest. Despite her brief yet impactful career in films, Sonam’s decision to marry and leave the country became one of the most intriguing and talked-about topics in the film industry.
