The Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association has been issuing notices to a number of Bollywood celebrities after allegations of sexual misconduct emerged against them. One such person to be issued a notice by IFTDA was actor Alok Nath, who was accused of rape by writer-director Vinta Nanda. However, the actor has refused to acknowledge the notice on the basis that no complaint was filed against him with the police. IFTDA had sent a notice to Alok on October 10 based on a complaint by Vinta, and the actor had filed a defamation suit against her, asking for a written apology and Re 1 as compensation. Now that he has refused to respond to IFTDA’s notice, the association has decided that it will take strong action against him. When IFTDA asked Alok to explain himself, his advocate Ashok Sarogi drafted a note stating, “My client states that however, in the present case, there is no complaint at all made with any of the police authorities nor filed with any of the legal authorities save and except making interviews and some complaints on social media.” Also Read - Mukesh Khanna Puts Up Clarification On His Sexist Remark, Says ‘I Commented On How MeToo Can Happen’
Reacting to the news about Alok ignoring the notice, IFTDA president Ashoke Pandit said that a meeting is being called, and ways and means under the law of the association are being looked at, by which members can be protected.
“Yes, she (Vinta) did not complaint to the police, but she did complain to us. So we will take a strong stand,” IANS quoted Ashoke as saying.
In the wake of the ongoing #MeToo movement, Vinta had written a long Facebook post alleging that Alok had misbehaved with her on the sets of 90s popular show, Tara, and when she raised her voice against him, she was assaulted. She alleged that her drinks were mixed and later when she woke up the next morning, she was in pain and that’s how she realised she had been raped by the actor.
Her disturbing post read, “I was invited to a party to this man’s house, his wife, my best friend was out of town. As the evening flowed, my drinks were mixed and I began to feel strange. Then at around 2 am I left his house. I started to walk home on the empty streets although the distance to my own house was long. Midway I was accosted by this man who was driving his own car and he asked me to sit in it and said he would drop me home. I trusted him and sat in his car.”
Alok had also been sent a notice by The Cine and TV Arts Association, but he ignored it, saying some women misused liberties, protection given to them to make false allegations.
