Three A-list directors are all set to clash as Aneez Bazmi’s Mubarakan, Madhur Bhandarkar’s Indu Sarkar and Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Raag Desh will release this Friday (July 28). While Mubarakan stars Arjun Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Ileana D’cruz and Athiya Shetty, Indu Sarkar has Kirti Kulhari, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Anupam Kher. As for Raag Desh, it has Mohit Marwah, Amit Sadh and Kunal Kapoor.
And going by the buzz that these three movies have managed to create, Mubarakan clearly will emerge as the winner. Our in-house trade exhibitor Akshaye Rathi (distributor and exhibitor) also agrees as he says, “Between the three, Mubarakan is obviously the biggest release this week. It’s going to open to good numbers, there is no doubt about that. You have big actors, an A-list director, so it has all the factors of a great commercial film. And the fact that Arjun Kapoor is coming together with Anil Kapoor for the first time is also quite exciting for many. The subject too is interesting. This is the film you can watch it with your family, as we all as kids, and that’s a really good thing about it.”
After a lot of controversies, Madhur finally managed to get his film to release this week. But will all the negative publicity affect the film, we asked Akshaye, who replied, “Talking about Indu Sarkar, the topic is interesting in this one as well, but at the same time there have been way too many controversies with the film, with the Congress asking for a ban and asking people not to watch the film. So somewhere it does keep people away from the theatres. And very honestly, even if I want to watch a film that has so much of tension around it and there are potential attacks in cinemas that are happening, then I’ll rather watch it when it airs on television. So these are the unfortunate things that are happening to Indu Sarkar. And I really hope that the filmmaker, who has won a National Award and who has delivered many films that have entertained huge number of people somehow manages to do with this one too.” ALSO READ: If Arjun Kapoor Was a Woman, This is Who He Would Date Between Charan and Karan From Mubarakan! When the trailer of Raag Desh was released, it got everyone talking. But soon all the buzz fizzled out. And while it’s very unfortunate, Akshaye feels that the film will be a good watch and a good word of mouth is the only saving grace for the film. “It’s very unfortunate. The trailer of Raag Desh was so impressive and it spoke about the history of India, about the Indian National Army, which every Indian takes pride in even today. I wish the makers had done more to promote the film. You start with a great buzz and have a good trailer, so the buzz has to go up, it’s not the other way round. And things that have happened here is exactly the opposite. So now the only hope is on the good word of mouth. I am sure it will be a good watch,” says Rathi.
Since Mubarakan will end up making more money at the box office, how much can we expect it to make on the opening day and over the first weekend? “I hope to see a Rs 6 crore to Rs 7 crore business for Mubarakan on the opening day, or maybe more than that. See this is not the most multiplex friendly genre that you are dabbling with here. A mass comedy like Mubarakan belongs more to the single screens. And by that I don’t mean the crass and massy humour, it’s more old school humour. The multiplex audience, especially the youth are used to a different kind of humour. But let’s hope that the multiplexes also get a good number. And if that happens then Mubarakan might end up making somewhere between Rs 17 crore to Rs 20 crore over the first weekend,” concludes Akshaye.
