The latest season of popular couple dance reality show Nach Baliye has already taken off. The current season is produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefims. As expected, Nach Baliye 7 has a lot of drama, which makes it apt to be referred to as a controversial reality show. The last six seasons of Nach Baliye were purely focussed on dance where celebrity couples would demonstrate their skills in various dance forms. However, Ekta tried to add some spark to the show by introducing the #TOOMUCH element, making it somewhat like Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss series. Nach Baliye 7 also got in a new set of judges – actress Preity Zinta, author Chetan Bhagat and dancer Marzi Pestonji. The popular novelist’s involvement in the dance based show raised quite a few eyebrows. As the show took off, Chetan’s lame comments on the contestants and their relationship status made it clear why he was on the show. The writer has no clue about what the contestants are performing on stage. All he wants to do is comment on their equation and become an agony aunt on a dance reality show! According to the new format of the show, the contestants of Nach Baliye 7 are locked in a secluded place with minimal communication with the outside world. The jodis have to perform a few tasks throughout the week to prove how perfect they are for each other. Some of the tasks are so tiring that the contestants are left with no energy to rehearse for their dance performance! Besides, they are given very limited time to rehearse, which mounts the pressure levels amongst the contestants. Last week, three contestants; Rashami Desai, Upen Patel and Arpit Ranka’s wife Nidhi; injured themselves while practising their act. While Upen and Nidhi performed despite being injured, Rashami was asked to take strict care of her injured feet and hence couldn’t perform. To add to the drama, the judges are not even sure of how to rate an act! Even the worst act gets 25 marks out of 30 from the judges and the best act gets 28/30 marks from the judges.
Chetan usually messes up the scoring by rating a performance with any score he wishes. In fact, it looks like he is partial to some contestants and purposely rates their good performance with low marks. With all the drama and #TOOMUCH factor, it forces us to wonder whether dance is still the focus on Nach Baliye 7. Are the judges really concerned about how well a jodi performs on stage, before rating them? Should Chetan act more realistic and understand the emphasis on nach (dance) in the show?
