Nandu Bhende was rock singer and actor of India from the city of Mumbai. Nandu Bhende’s real name was Sadanand Atmaram Bhende. He was the son of Marathi actor-director Atmaram Bhende and Dr Asha Bhende. Nandu Bhende is regarded as one of India’s pioneering rock star. Nandu Bhende born in a westernized English speaking family and since childhood he had been singing song of famous band Beatles on radio. He grew up when rock band like Beatles, Stones, Who, Doors and their artists were at the perk of success and rock music has become passion in western. He started his singing career in 70’s. Nandu had distinctive and voice and rock style of signing. He sang with country’s first bands like Velvette, Fogg, Savage Encounter, Atomic Forest and Nandu Bhende Band. Nandu Bhende also had a rocker’s personality. He had long hair and he always would perform in his particular dress code Kurta, jeans and Kolhapuri chappal.

However, Nandu Bhende had a good voice but he was untrained. Even in his family no one was a professional musician. But his versatile voice and his singing style made Velvette and Fogg the college band. As a rock singer Nandu Bhende gave his voice in some of the bollywood films too. He sang the track “Krishna Dharti pe aa ja” composed by Bappi Lahiri for the film Disco Dancer. For his incredible performance in Disco Dancer, Nandu Bhende received Gold Disc. He also sang playback for music directors like veteran R.D Burman and Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Apart from being a pioneer of Indian rock bands, Nandu Bhende showed his acting skills in theatre too. He played the role of Judas in Alyque Padmasee’s famous Jesus Christ Superstar and the role of Jesus in the Bangalore version of the same opera. He further acted in Jaya a rock opera on Mahabharata as Yudhishtira.

After achieving success in the genre of rock music, Nandu Bhende started a studio in which he trained youngsters. He founded a voice and music production video in 1998 to train voiceover artists, singers and actors.

The legend of Indian rock music Nandu Bhende is no more now. RIP Nandu Bhende and always Rock.
