Bhajan singer Narendra Chanchal died in Delhi on Friday at the age of 80 due to age-related ailments.

Singer Narendra Chanchal, the popular Bhajan singer, breathed his last on Friday in Delhi. The 80-year-old singer had created many popular devotional songs. Chanchal was considered a pioneer in the field of Bhajan singing and had crooned to songs like ‘Chalo Bulava Aya Hai’, ‘O Jangal Ke Raja‘ and ‘Beshak Mandir Masjid Todo.

PM Narendra Modi took to Twitter to offer condolences to his family and friends. In his tweet made on Friday, he wrote, “लोकप्रिय भजन गायक नरेंद्र चंचल जी के निधन के समाचार से अत्यंत दुख हुआ है। उन्होंने भजन गायन की दुनिया में अपनी ओजपूर्ण आवाज से विशिष्ट पहचान बनाई। शोक की इस घड़ी में मेरी संवेदनाएं उनके परिजनों और प्रशंसकों के साथ हैं। ओम् शांति!” (I am deeply saddened by the news of popular singer Narendra Chanchal passing away. Apart from singing at concerts and other events, Chanchal also created songs for many Bollywood movies including Bobby and Avtaar. He was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Male Singer for Bobby for crooning Beshal Mandir Masjid. The news of his death was confirmed by his concert organiser of 25 years. He mentioned that Chanchal had not been doing well for sometime and he died at around 12 pm on Friday due to age-related ailments.

Apart from PM Modi, many colleagues and friends of the legendary Bhajan singer took to social media to mourn his death. Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi wrote a tweet and said, “Deeply saddened to learn that iconic and most loved #NarendraChanchal ji has left us for the heavenly abode. In prayers for his soul to rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his family and legions of fans.” (sic) Music composer Vishal Dadlani wrote, “Shri #NarendraChanchal ji will be remembered forever through the songs he sang. I doubt anyone will ever walk up to Vaishnodevi without hearing his voice resounding through the hills. (sic)” Actor Ranvir Shorey also expressed sorrow and wrote, “Saddened at the demise of vocalist Sh. Narendra Chanchal, singer of many iconic bhajans & Hindi film songs in history. His unique voice had the ability to pierce straight to a listener’s heart, making every listening experience an emotional & spiritual one. #RIP #respect”

Narendra Chanchal had dedicated almost his entire life to singing religious songs. May his soul rest in peace!
