While Hema and Dharmendra got married in 1980, before that, Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur and had four kids. Upon seeing this, Hema’s parents were completely against this union, and in a wake of steering the actress away from Dharmendra, Hema’s parents even arranged a potential marriage between Hema and Jeetendra, who was also one of the known actors of that era.
According to an anecdote shared by IndianExpress, Jeetendra’s close friend revealed in Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s book Beyond the Dream Girl that the actor never wanted to marry Hema Malini because he knew she loved Dharmendra. He told his friend, “I don’t want to marry Hema. I don’t love her and she doesn’t love me. But my family wants it, so I can. And she is a very nice girl.”
This union felt quite complicated as Dharmendra was also dating Shobha Kapoor (then called Sippy), and on the other hand, Hema was in love with Dharmendra. However, when Hema and Jeetendra’s respective partners came to know about their partner’s wedding, they decided to barge in.
Dharmendra reached the wedding venue drunk and barged in, asking Hema’s parents not to get her married to Jeetendra. The He-Man of Bollywood even urged Hema’s parents to let him speak to her privately. After the discussion between Hema and Dharmendra, Hema tried convincing her parents that she needed time to think about her and Jeetendra’s wedding.
It was all no less than a film scene straight out of reality. Further, after a lot of furious and heated arguments between Hema, Jeetendra, Dharmendra, and their families, the wedding was called off. And, the rest we know is history.
Though Hema and Dharmendra did not get married at the same venue or same time, the duo tied the knot in 1980. The couple was blessed with two daughters.
