Love stories abound in the B-town. Unrequited lovers, mushy couples, dramatic wedding crashers, friends turned lovers- all the romantics dramas you have ever seen, somewhere, someone has been there and done that. Veteran actress Hema Malini was and is regarded the ‘Dream Girl’. Her innocence in beauty melted hearts away. She herself had been in relationships that were much talked about in the industry but one culminated into marriage after undergoing test of times, society and families too.
Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s love story is common knowledge but he was not her family’s first choice for their daughter. Not just the ‘Sholay’ actor, but Jeetendra almost got married to her and she even had a serious relationship with Sanjeev Kumar. The list of her suitors goes long. However, one report suggests that Hema Malini’s mother wanted some other actor to be her son-in-law.
The ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ actress was born into a Tamil Iyenger Brahmin family t0 Jaya Chakraborty. She is a trained classical dancer who made her movie debut in 1963 with the Tamil film Idhu Sathiyam. Malini first acted in a lead role in ‘Sapno Ka Saudagar’ (1968). She further went on to work in several films and has worked with elite celebrities of the time.
Hema Malini and Sanjeev Kuma’s relationship was quite talked about back in the day. They were so much in love that they arranged their parents to meet for marriage and settle down. However, due to difference of opinions and Kumar’s family demand of Malini quitting her career acted like the deal breaker.
Later, Hema Malini and Dharmendra started spending lot of time together on film sets and their admiration for each other grew stronger. However, Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur and this became a major challenge in their relation. Malini’s parents were against the idea of their daughters being committed to man who is already married and had kids.
According to Mayapuri 250th issue, Malini’s mother wanted another actor, film director, Kannada writer and playwright Girish Karnad as her son-in-law. She liked both Girish’s behaviour and demeanors. Reportedly, Jaya went on to produce a film titles ‘Ratnadeep’ in order to formulaically make them spend time and hopefully fall in love . However, that did not happen and lastly Hema Malini and Dharmendra tied the knot and became parents to two daughters.!
