The popularity of OTT, often referred to as third screen of cinema, has significantly surged recently. It’s important to recognize that OTT can be seen as mobile cinema, where both new and classic films and series are available for our viewing pleasure, allowing us to entertain ourselves at our own pace. OTT is particularly well-known for its series content, showcasing renowned titles like Mirzapur, Gullak, Panchayat, The Family Man, and Sacred Games. While all these series have received impressive ratings, you might be surprised to learn that there is an older television show that continues to surpass these series.
Here we are talking about the renowned TV series Malgudi Days, which premiered in 1986 and aired on Doordarshan. It comprised 13 episodes in English and over 50 episodes in Hindi. This show, adapted from short stories by legendary writer and novelist late, RK Narayan, was produced by the creators using borrowed funds.
The immense affection from the audience allowed the creators to settle all their debts. The initial three seasons were directed by Shankar Nag, while the fourth season was directed by Kavita Lankesh. Both the first and second seasons contained 13 episodes each, and the fourth season included 15 episodes. IMDb has rated this series an impressive 9.4.
The show gained significant popularity in the 1980s, prompting Indian Railways to honor it by renaming Arsalu Railway Station in Karnataka to Malgudi Railway Station. The cast featured several prominent stars, such as Girish Karnad and Anant Nag. The character of Swami was portrayed by Master Manjunath, whose performance greatly impressed viewers.
A film titled Malgudi Days was released in 2020 and is available for streaming on Amazon Prime. It was written and directed by Kishore Moodbidri, which featured Vijay Raghavendra, Greeshma Sridhar, Arjun Kapikad, Dhanaraj Cm and Tejaswini in pivotal roles.
