Veteran actor Om Puri has been a lot in news after his sensational comments on the Uri martyrs on Tuesday. After the actor spoke to a popular television channel about this burning current issue and expressed that the Pakistani artistes should not be sent back to their homeland and further asked , “Who had asked the soldiers to join the army? Who told them to pick up the weapons?”. Just 24 hours after this incident, the actor backtracked on his earlier statement and apologized profusely to the soldiers. He even said that he deserves punishment and all the humiliation. He said, “People have every right to react to this…twitter messages, abuses, whatever humiliation I deserve that for opening my mouth for without thinking and hurting the sentiments of the country, the army and the warrior soldiers. ” Well,the actor’s 360 degree turn from his earlier stand seems extremely surprising as he is known to speak his mind at all times. Puri, on Tuesday, was present on a debate and had made a rather pertinent point, “What good will it do to send Pakistani artistes back?’ but the argument took an offensive turn when the anchor asked him , “But what about the Uri martyrs’. Puri’s response to this question was deemed disrespectful and offensive to the nation and its army. Puri was later quick to say that few of his family members too have been a part of the army but it was their personal choice. But, the damage was already done and he garnered a lot of flak! Only time will tell if masses forgive Om Puri for his statements after this eloquent apology. Like Om Puri, Salman Khan and more recently Radhika Apte too have condemned the ban on Pakistani artistes. While, Randeep Hooda, Anupam Kher, Madhur Bhandarkar among other film personalities have openly supported the same.
