The stage was set for this year’s Oscar Awards. The great gala of Academy Awards 2019 began with some stunning red carpet appearances. While this year remained especially controversial for the Academy, seemed like everything resulted in just more buzz around the 91st Oscars. Leading the nominations this year were Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma and Yorgo Lanthimos’ The Favourite with 10 nominations each. Roma, in fact, was the first Netflix film to have received a nomination. The year also brought-in many firsts for the Academy. Apart from Netflix getting its first nomination in years, Oscars saw a nomination of superhero film for the first time in the Best Picture category. While Black Panther‘s Ruth E Carter made history as the first black woman to win Oscar for Best Production Design, Alfonso Cuaron took home Best Director trophy for Roma, as expected. Green Book‘s win as Best Picture, however, created little controversy as Twitterati deemed it a film that unacceptably simplified racism on screen. Everything aside, it was also a big day for Indian producer Gunit Monga whose short documentary titled Period. End of Sentence won the Best Documentary Short Subject award at the Oscars. It was a film based in India and talked about taboo around menstruation in the country.
