Padma Awards was instituted in the year 1954. Every year on Republic Day (January 26) the winners are honoured. The award is given in three categories – Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. The Padma Shri award is for distinguished service, the Padma Bhushan award is for distinguished service of a high order and the Padma Vibhushan award is for exceptional and distinguished service. The people who are not eligible for these awards include Government servants including those working with PSUs, except doctors and scientists. Kailash Kher, K.J. Yesudas, Anuradha Paudwal and many others from the entertainment industry have become recipients to the prestigious Padma Awards 2017. These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year. This year the President of India has approved conferment of Padma Awards to 89 persons. Padma Awards 2017: Padma Shri

Shri Kailash Kher Art-Music, Maharashtra – A well known name in the Indian pop-rock and Bollywood scene, Kailash Kher music style is marked for its influence and inspiration from Indian folk and Sufi music. The singer has rendered songs in various languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Odia and Urdu. One of the most popular contemporary Sufi singers, Kher has lent his voice to over 70 Bollywood songs.

Smt. Anuradha Paudwal Art-Music, Maharashtra – Anuradha Paudwal needs no Introduction! She has been one of the most popular playback singers in Bollywood with over 6000 Hindi songs to her credit. The National Film Awardee has also lent her soulful voice to devotional songs in various languages that include Hindi, Kannada, Marwari, Pahari, Marathi, Sanskrit, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya, Assamese, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Nepali and Maithili. The singer entered the world of Bollywood in 1973 when she sang a few songs a shloka in the movie, Abhimaan starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. She was always compared to the Mangeshkar singers, with the media always pitting one against the other!

Shri Sadhu Meher Art-Cinema Odisha – One of the pioneers of parallel cinema in India in the 1980s, Sadhu Meher has worked as an actor, director, and producer in both Hindi and Odia film industries.  While he started his career in films with Hindi language movies like Bhuvan Shome, Ankur and Mrigaya, he shifted focus to Oriya films. He is also a National Film Awardee for Best Actor for Ankur.

Smt. Bharathi Vishnuvardhan Art-Cinema Karnataka – Bharathi Vishnuvardhan has worked as an actress in the Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu film industries. One of the leading ladies in Kannada cinema in the late 1960s to 1980s, she first came into limelight with the 1996 film Nadodi starring M. G. Ramachandran and Saroja Devi. Offers to play lead actress in Tamil films followed soong. Gemini Ganeshan, Ravichandran, Jaishankar, Shivaji Ganeshan are some of the leads she was paired opposite. Her tryst with Hindi films came in 1967 when she did a film Mehrbaan followed by Saadu Aur Shaitaan in 1968.

Padma Awards 2017: Padma Bhushan

Shri Vishwa Mohan Bhatt Art-Music Rajasthan – The Grammy Award winner for the album A Meeting by the River, the instrumentalist who plays the Mohan Veena has been a name to reckon with when it comes to fusion music and pan-cultural collaborations. He has been working closely with Western artists such as Taj Mahal, Béla Fleck and Jerry Douglas in the past.

Padma Awards 2017: Padma Vibhushan

Shri KJ Yesudas – Art – Music, Kerala – In a career spanning over 5 decades, singer K J Yesudas has recorded over 50,000 songs in a number of languages like Malay, Russian, Arabic, Latin, English along with many Indian languages. He has also composed a number of Malayalam film songs in the 1970s and 1980s and won the National Award for the Best Male Playback Singer seven times apart from bagging 5 Filmfare Awards and the State Award for the Best Playback Singer 43 times! The music legend has already been awarded the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Bhushan in 2002 by the Government of India for his contributions towards the arts.
