Padmaavat starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh has been one of the most awaited films ever since it was announced. Fans of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s kind of cinema knew that they has something never seen before and grand coming their way. The film is Bollywood’s solo release, thankfully after better sense prevailed and Akshay Kumar shifted the release of Padman to next month. Add to this, it will benefit from the Republic Day long weekend and from the fact that it is Bollywood’s first big release after Salman Khan – Katrina Kaif’s Tiger Zinda Hai last month. There is no doubt that the opening day will be big. But to know an insight into the opening day and weekend performance of Padmaavat and to put a number of the magnanimity of the Rs 190 crore project, we spoke to trade analyst and film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi. He was positive about the response that Padmaavati stands to get. Talking to India.com, Rathi said, “There is a huge anticipation amongst movie goers about Padmaavat. A lot of people want to watch it. It is a rich tribute to India’s History, especially the Rajasthani and Rajput community. The booking for paid previews that are happening on the 24th, a day prior to the official release, and I am only talking about the premium IMAX properties, is extraordinary.” Also Read - Ranveer Singh's Diamond-Studded Wrist Watch is Super Stunning And Super Expensive - Guess The Price
Rathi also gave us an understanding for the advance booking for Friday, which is a holiday owing to Republic Day, giving the film a three day unstoppable run at the box office till Sunday. “The advance booking for Friday and for all shows on Sunday as well are great. And we are expecting a bumper opening.” Till Sunday, reports suggest that the film might open to a 65-70% occupancy. This number is set to soar as we move into the week, closer to the release date.
We asked Rathi to put a number to the opening figures, and like a pre-calculated thought, he said a Rs 100 crore plus on the first four days. “Padmaavat can conveniently cross the Rs 100 crore mark on the four day weekend (25-28).” In this, he didn’t consider the paid previews being held on 24th. “The opening figures are subject to a lot of factors,” Rathi continued, “We are really hopeful that the state governments, the law enforcement agencies especially after the Supreme Court order, will ensure all the protection, that there are no protests of cases of vandalism that take place when people go out to watch Padmaavat.”
It should be noted that Tiger Zinda Hai, the biggest hit of 2017, opened to a whopping Rs 34 crore. It remains to be seen if Padmaavat breaks this record. Till then. stay tuned to India.com for all the latest updates on Padmaavat.
