Kolkata, Nov 20: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday spoke out on the controversy surrounding the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmavati, calling it a ‘super emergency’. “The Padmavati controversy is not only unfortunate but also a calculated plan of a political party to destroy the freedom to express ourselves. We condemn this super emergency. All in the film industry must come together and protest in one voice,” the West Bengal Chief Minister said in a statement on Monday. Mamata’s statement came amid protests against the release of Padmavati by the Rajput community and some Bharatiya Janata Party leaders across the country. “Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the studio behind ‘Padmavati’, has voluntarily deferred the release date of the film from December 1st 2017,” a statement said. A Viacom18 Motion Pictures spokesperson said that they had the highest regard for the law of the land and statutory bodies such as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). As a “responsible and law-abiding corporate citizen”, it was committed to following the established procedure and convention, he said. “We have faith that we will soon obtain the requisite clearances to release the film,” the statement read.

Haryana BJP leader’s Bounty on Deepika

Suraj Pal Amu, BJP leader from Haryana, on Sunday declared a bounty of Rs 10 crore for beheading Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Speaking at a private event, Amu threatened actor Ranveer Singh to break his legs after Singh had expressed his unhappiness at the mounting protests by fringe groups like Rajput Karni Sena.

He also questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue. He said the Rajput community was used as a vote bank by the saffron party. He added that he is ready to quit the party but will not bow down on the issue.
