A proud moment unfolded for fans of Bollywood icon Rekha as she was honoured at the Red Sea International Film Festival during the international premiere of her classic film Umrao Jaan’s 4K restored version. The legendary actress, celebrated for her remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, delivered a heartfelt speech that captivated the audience.

The iconic moment

The festival’s official Instagram handle shared a video of her speech, captioning it, “We were honored to hear from the legendary Rekha, a rare and unforgettable moment at the Red Sea International Film Festival. Her presence lit up the room as she reflected on a remarkable career that has shaped generations of Indian cinema.”

What did Rekha say?

During her speech, Rekha reflected on her journey as an actor and shared personal insights about her craft. She said, “I am not much of a talker. Even in Umrao Jaan, the dialogues said half of what my eyes could feel and express. Muzaffar (Aziz) Saab is right. I think one look is enough.”

She added, “As my mother always used to say, ‘You don’t talk about your achievements and feelings. You don’t teach people by telling them what to do. You just live by example. You live your best life, and they can learn and evolve, especially what not to do.'”

Her words resonated deeply with the audience, emphasizing her belief in silent expression and living by example rather than relying on words alone. She concluded, “Baaton se kuchh nahi hota hai, sirf ishq se hota hai (There is nothing to be gained with words, all that matters is love). Aur wo bhi khamosh ishq (That too, silent romance).”

About the classic Umrao Jaan

Rekha’s classic film Umrao Jaan, directed by Muzaffar Ali, is celebrated for its timeless storytelling, evocative music, and Rekha’s iconic performance. The film also stars late Farooq Shaikh, Raj Babbar, Vijayendra Ghatge, and Naseeruddin Shah, among other talented actors. Known for its poetic expression and Rekha’s unforgettable portrayal of the courtesan Umrao Jaan, the film remains a landmark in Indian cinema.

In a significant revival, Umrao Jaan returned to theatres in India on June 27, 2025, in a newly restored 4K version, allowing audiences to experience the visual grandeur and musical richness of the classic in modern clarity.
