A sequel to one of Tamil cinema's biggest blockbusters
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 follows the phenomenal success of Jailer (2023). The original film became one of the biggest Tamil blockbusters in recent years, collecting more than Rs 604.50 crore worldwide during its theatrical run.
The first film featured Rajinikanth as retired prison officer Muthuvel Pandian, whose search for justice after his police officer son disappeared led him into a deadly battle against an idol-smuggling syndicate. Made on an estimated budget of around Rs 200 crore, cementing its place among Tamil cinema's biggest commercial successes.
Bigger cast and higher stakes for Rajinikanth's action thriller
The sequel brings back several familiar faces while introducing new additions. Rajinikanth returns as Muthuvel Pandian alongside Kannada superstar Dr. Shiva Rajkumar and Malayalam legend Mohanlal, who reprise their roles from the first film. The ensemble cast also includes S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Yogi Babu, Ramya Krishnan and Mirnaa Menon. One of the biggest highlights is Vidya Balan, who will make her Tamil cinema debut with Jailer 2, adding even more star power to the project.
Hrithik Roshan's special appearance
Another major talking point surrounding Jailer 2 is the inclusion of Hrithik Roshan in a significant cameo. Reports suggest the role was initially discussed with Shah Rukh Khan, but scheduling commitments and his preparation for King, which also marks Suhana Khan's theatrical debut, reportedly prevented him from joining the film. According to reports, Hrithik's appearance goes beyond a brief cameo. He is expected to play a close friend of Rajinikanth's character who steps in during a major crisis, making his role an important part of the story.
For the unversed, this massive casting update marks a full-circle moment for Indian cinema, as it arrives exactly 40 years after their first collaboration in the 1986 film Bhagwaan Dada, where a young Hrithik featured as a child actor playing Rajinikanth's foster son named Govinda Dada.
