As we come to the end of March (almost) Rajinikanth fans are waiting for the end of next month, when the superstar’s Kaala Kaarikalan will hit screens on April 27. The crime thriller, based on a Mumbai-based gangster, is one of the most awaited films of 2018 and there have been reports suggesting the film will release in April. Even though there is no official confirmation on the date of Kaala release, fans are expecting to see Thalaiva grace the big screen next month. Also Read - Tried The 'Rajinikanth Style' Dosa? However, to give us some clarity, the production house Lyca Productions has issued a statement about the release date. In a tweet, Lyca revealed, “Lyca Productions has not conveyed anything to anyone regarding #Kaala release date. We are not responsible for any statements arising on release date speculations.” Sources are of the opinion that there is a question mark on the release on not just Rajinikanth film but a lot of others due to the TFPC strike (Tamil Film Producers Council). With Lyca’s official statement, there are more chances of the film Kaala being pushed from the suggested April 27 date. However, trade analysts are of the opinion that releasing Kaala on April 17 is crucial for the makers since the next date for them will be Ramzan (13 June) which is already taken by many films. Trade analyst and senior film critic Sreedhar Pillia is of the opinion, “As of now, Lyca Production has lined up Rajinikanth’s 2 Point O as an Independence Day release for 15 August. The buzz is that “special permission” or priority will have to be given by TFPC to release Kaala on 27 April. The Tamil Nadu Theatres Association also wants Kaala to be given “tatkal clearance” for a 27 April release to “bring back audiences to the theatres after the strike is over.” But till there is no official word in this, the release of Kaala lies in quandary.
Amid uncertainty regarding the theatrical release, Kaala has already bagged a whopping Rs 75 crore through satellite rights. According to reports, this amount includes rights to all the four languages. Incidentally, Rajinikanth’s other film, 2.0 has been sold for Rs 110 crore. Coming back to Kaala, the first look released on March 2 and the promo has been loved by fans and critics alike. The film is written and directed by Pa. Ranjith, and stars Nana Patekar, Pankaj Tripathi, Huma Qureshi among others.
