Hirani initially imagined this acclaimed actor in the lead, showcasing the intriguing twists that shaped this iconic film.
This revelation adds an intriguing dimension to the film’s history, showcasing the unpredictable twists of fate that often come with the filmmaking process. In a candid interview on Film Companion’s “My First Film,” Rajkumar Hirani delved into his casting journey, revealing that after considering Anil Kapoor, both Vivek Oberoi and Shah Rukh Khan were also contenders for the iconic role of Munna Bhai.
Hirani shared that he approached Shah Rukh while he was in the midst of another shoot. Although busy Khan showed genuine interest in the script even suggesting that Hirani narrate it to Aishwarya Rai as they were working together on “Devdas” at the time.
However, destiny took a turn when Shah Rukh Khan faced a spinal injury that necessitated surgery, preventing him from taking on the role. In a candid video shared by ‘thebollywoodoryginals’ on Instagram, Khan reflects on this challenging time, stating, “I couldn’t do Munna Bhai because I was injured. I had undergone a spinal operation, and I wasn’t certain when I’d be ready to return.” He recognised that waiting for his recovery wasn’t feasible for Rajkumar Hirani, who was eager to push forward with his directorial debut.
