Rati Agnihotri opens up about 30 years of marital abuse, says, 'would kill…’

Rati Agnihotri was one of the most recognised faces of the 1980s, the star who rose to instant fame with Ek Duuje Ke Liye and Coolie. Yet, at the height of her stardom, she stepped away from films in 1985 after marrying architect Anil Virwani. What looked like a fairytale move from the outside soon turned into a reality she hid for decades.

Living in a plush penthouse in Mumbai’s Worli, the actress was silently battling domestic violence, something she disclosed much later in life. In an emotional interview, she revealed that the abuse began early in the marriage and continued for nearly 30 years, hidden behind a forced smile and a perfectly curated public image.

What made her stay in the marriage?

Rati shared that she stayed married for two reasons. First, her deep belief in the sanctity of marriage. Second, she gave birth to her son Tanuj Virwani just a year after tying the knot.
Her son became her priority, and she kept hoping things would eventually change. She said she often convinced herself to endure it quietly, masking pain with politeness and a smile people admired but never questioned.

She even revealed that the attacks were often aimed at parts of her body that wouldn’t show bruises, making it easier to maintain the illusion of a “happy family.”

What finally pushed her to walk away?

According to her interview, the turning point came on March 7, 2015, when her son was away shooting in Pune. A violent outburst left her shaken. “I was 54 and realised I’d only grow older and weaker,” she had said. “One day, this would kill me.”

A week later, on March 14, she mustered the courage to walk into a police station alone and filed a domestic violence complaint.

How did Tanuj respond?

Tanuj stood firmly with his mother. When he learned what she had endured, he shifted in with her without hesitation. Over time, he also attempted to help his parents reconcile, but Rati never returned to the Worli home. Instead, she moved to her Lonavala bungalow for a fresh start.

Where is Rati Agnihotri now?

As reported by Hindustan Times, Rati now spends most of her time in Poland, where she co-runs a restaurant with her sister Anita. Her son Tanuj continues to pursue his acting career in India.

Her journey remains a reminder of how even the brightest stars can carry the heaviest shadows—until they choose to step out of them.
