One of the very first romantic movies that left the audience awestruck has to be Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The chemistry between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol won the hearts of millions. However, do you remember Chutki from DDLJ, who played Kajol’s sister in the film? Do you know what she is doing these days? If not, then keep on scrolling.
The role of Chutki was played by Pooja Ruparel in DDLJ. Her debut film was King Uncle, which also featured Shah Rukh Khan. Following King Uncle, Pooja appeared in DDLJ, where she played the role of Kajol’s younger sister.
Since her appearance in DDLJ, Pooja went on to feature in X: Past Is Present and the Hindi adaptation of the TV series 24. However, she has largely stayed away from films and television in recent years.
In a conversation with Times of India, Pooja said, “Her wit, humour, and way of looking at things… I was like that in real life as well. In fact, no character has been as close to me as Chutki. Her really bad people skills and terrible sense of timing when it came to giving advice made her more human — it’s a typical trait of teenagers. At home, my family used to call me ‘dadi maa’ when I was a kid, and I was the only child till I turned six. I would talk like adults because I hung out with them. Chutki, too, had all these traits. She was an extension of me in many ways.”
Pooja, popularly known as Chutki, hails from a film family and has often shared in interviews that she grew up surrounded by actors. For those unaware, veteran actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha is her uncle, making Sonakshi Sinha her cousin.
However, Pooja lost her father at a young age and had to find her own path, taking up a few film roles before venturing out independently to sustain herself.
Pooja’s last film was almost nine years ago when she featured in Pela Adhi Akshar, where she starred as the lead actress. However, after that, Pooja left the industry, and today she is a stand-up comic.
In an old interview, Pooja opened up about her career. She said, “You need people to make you laugh. Women always want to marry a guy who is funny. But why not be the funny one? Why is the responsibility of being funny on the man? So this is how stand-up happened. I also dabbled in doing voiceovers. I am also a qualified corporate trainer. I have done my master’s in industrial psychology.”
