Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has served time at Pune’s Yerwada Jail, and will be released before 7 am IST, according to reports. The actor’s family, including wife Maanayata Dutt and sister Priya Dutt with her husband Owen Roncon, will be there at the prison gates to receive him. Dutt was sentenced to five years in jail in connection with the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case for illegal possession of arms (AK-56 rifles). The actor had already served one-and-a-half years in prison in the nineties, and surrendered before the TADA Court in May 2013 after the Supreme Court of India upheld his conviction in the case. 1. Dutt will be released from Yerwada Jail in the outskirts of Pune once all formalities are completed. The time being given is 7 am IST but it could be earlier. Dutt will be received by his family, and he will take a chartered flight to Mumbai. 2. As soon as he lands in the city around 11 am IST at Santacruz east, he will take the car to the Siddhivinayak Ganesha Temple in Prabhadevi.
3. After offering prayers to the Lord, Dutt will head to the Badakabarastan in Marine Lines, further south, to pray at his mother Nargis Dutt’s grave. Nargis Dutt was a renowned actress of Hindi cinema and died just before the release of Dutt’s debut film Rocky in 1981.
4. The Munna Bhai actor will finally head home to Imperial Heights at Pali Hill, Bandra west, where he will perform a puja in the foyer where his late father, actor-politician Sunil Dutt’s portrait has been placed. After some rest and freshening up, Dutt will speak to the media, even as fans are likely to throng his residence to catch a glimpse of their star. Dutt will also be visited by close friends from the film industry who stood by him in his trying times.
Meanwhile, a fresh public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Bombay High Court on February 24, challenging Dutt’s release on remission and alleging that the actor was getting preferential treatment because of his celebrity status.
Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde told the media that Dutt will be completing his jail term on February 25 due to eight months and 16 days exemption or remission granted on account of his good behaviour in prison. Dutt made paper bags in prison, read, and also was the prison radio jockey!
