Twitter has been buzzing with the news of India’s Intelligence Bureau (IB) reportedly running a terror check on one of the six accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape case. The said rapist was a juvenile when the incident took place and was not tried like the other five accused, as laws are different for criminals who are under 18 years of age in India. One of the adult accused has died since. The juvenile rapist is now being searched for his alleged links with terrorists in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He was ‘possibly radicalised’ by J&K militants he shared a cell, particularly a Kashmiri youth involved in the Delhi High Court bombing in 2011, reports the Daily Mail.
Celebrity stylist and Bigg Boss contestant Sapna Bhavnani, who had recently confessed to have been raped at 24, tweeted this morning to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “If the rapists of nirbhaya ate beef they would’ve been hung already. Without trial. This is what you have done to our country @narendramodi”.
We hope Sapna Bhavnani’s tweet on the Nirbhaya rapists will open the eyes of PM Narendra Modi to what is important in the country – dealing with daily cases of sexual abuse and violence or action against consumption of beef.
Really, is beef ban more urgent than the safety of a woman or little girl? How does that even compare? What is the Prime Minister doing in having better safety measures for women? The #SelfiewithDaughter initiative? How about bettering the transport in Delhi, so that girls like Nirbhaya (Jyoti Singh Pandey) do not have to use unsafe public transport and thereby be raped and murdered?
Yes, we do hope the PM gets more time to look at these issues after the Bihar assembly elections 2015 and his meetings with his foreign counterparts are over.
