The makers have released the trailer of Sheer Qorma that features Shabana Azmi, Swara Bhasker and Divya Dutta in the lead. The film talks about breaking taboos around the same-sex relationship and how more than the rest of the world, one’s own family needs to accept and normalise homosexuality first. Divya and Swara’s characters – Sitara and Saira, respectively, are in love with each other. They live together only to realise that Saira’s mother, played by Shabana, is unable to accept their relationship. In one of the most beautiful highlights from the film, Sitara addresses Saira as ‘they’ and the latter explains how she identifies herself as ‘non-binary’ and pronounces are ‘gender-neutral’ – they, them, theirs. Directed by Faraz Asif Ansari, Sheer Qorma explores more of personal bondings and complexity of emotions within the family than commenting on what others think. In a scene where Sitara tries to comfort Saira, she says, “Agar tumhe mauka mile na, toh tum apne ammi aur abbu se vo baat kehna jo main kabhi apne ammi aur abbu se nahi keh paugi — ‘mohabbat gunaah nahi hai.” (If you ever get a chance to speak to your mom and dad, please tell them something that I will never be able to tell my parents – love is not a sin). The film is set in Pakistan and also features Priya Malik in an important role. The trailer promises a lot of beauty and sensitivity in handling a subject like homosexuality. Further, with such talented performers in the lead, Sheer Qorma seems like great support to the LGBTQ community. The film releases at a ‘film festival near you’ soon. Watch out!
