Hitesh Kewalya-directorial Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, starring actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar in the lead is going steady at the box office even in its second week. Witnessing a tough competition from Taapsee Pannu’s Thappad, the film managed to mint Rs 58.94 crore on day 14 and will cross Rs. 60 crore in Weekend 3. Sharing the figures on Twitter, Indian film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#ShubhMangalZyadaSaavdhan is strictly okay in Week 2… Fares better during the weekend, slips on weekdays… Will cross ₹ 60 cr in Weekend 3… [Week 2] Fri 2.08 cr, Sat 3.25 cr, Sun 4.06 cr, Mon 1.40 cr, Tue 1.35 cr, Wed 1.01 cr, Thu 95 lakhs. The film earned Rs 9.55 crore on opening day in India. On the second day, it collected Rs 11.08 crore. On the third day, it raked in Rs 12.03 crore, taking its opening weekend collection to Rs 32.66 crore. In the second weekend, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan minted Rs 9.39 crore.
Talking about the film in an interview earlier, Ayushmann had told IANS, “It is a beautiful story told in the quintessential Aanand L. Rai style of filmmaking that will touch your hearts and leave a smile on your face. It is one of the most brilliant films that I have read in a long time and it handles the subject of homosexuality really sensitively. It is a pleasure to collaborate again with the master storyteller of our times. It is an out and out entertaining film that will also make you think and that’s the hallmark of good cinema.”
He also revealed that he was discouraged to sign the film because no leading man from the industry has ever portrayed a serious homosexual character on-screen. The actor, who’s known for being a part of the films that initiate a dialogue about social change, said he was adamant about breaking this stereotype and putting forth the issues faced by the LGBTQ community in India.
