Finally marking its entry into the coveted Rs 50 crore club, Hitesh Kewalya-directorial Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, starring actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar in the lead, witnessed an uplift courtesy the weekend. Addressing the taboos around homosexuality in India and how middle-class families struggle to normalise same-sex relationships, the family entertainer Rs 50.17 crore.

Sharing the soaring figures on his social media handle, Indian film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh revealed, “#ShubhMangalZyadaSaavdhan witnesses an upward trend on [second] Sat… Crosses ₹ 50 cr… Stronger hold on [second] Sun should place it in a comfortable position [vis-à-vis its economics]… [Week 2] Fri 2.08 cr, Sat 3.25 cr. Actor Ayushmann Khurrana is probably the first mainstream actor to have portrayed an out-and-out gay character in his upcoming film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. However, the actor says that the decision of taking up this character wasn’t easy. Ayushmann, in his latest interview with a daily, revealed that he was discouraged to sign the film because no leading man from the industry has ever portrayed a serious homosexual character on-screen. The actor, who’s known for being a part of the films that initiate a dialogue about social change, said he was adamant about breaking this stereotype and putting forth the issues faced by the LGBTQ community in India.

Starring actors Ayushmann Khurrana, Gajraj Rao, Neena Gupta, Manurishi Chaddha, Jitu K, Sunita Rajwar, Maanvi Gagroo, Pankhuri Awasthy and Neeraj Singh, the film is written and directed by Hitesh Kewalya and bankrolled by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma. It features Jitendra as Ayushmann’s on-screen love interest.
