Sonu Nigam‘s tweet over the Azaan playing on loudspeaker created havoc in the country. He got severely trolled and criticised on social media for his tweets. He had tweeted, “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India.” He was then supported by some people while some showed disappointment over this. In fact an FIR was also filed against him in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. Adding to this mess, Syed Sha Atef Ali Al Quaderi, vice president, West Bengal Minority United Council even issued a Fatwa against him saying, “If anyone can shave his hair, put a garland of old torn shoes around his neck and tour him around the country, I personally announce an award of Rs 10 lakh for that person.”
We could also see celebs like Shaan, Kailash Kher, Sunil Grover and many such supporting him. But celebs like Wajid Khan and Baba Sehgal were not happy with what was said. The singer has been very active on Twitter trying to clear his stance and help people see the point he is trying to make instead of labeling him ‘intolerant’ and ‘anti-Muslim’. But guess that was not enough! Following this realisation, Sonu Nigam called a press conference on Wednesday morning to once again talk about it openly on record so that nothing is misconstrued anymore. While addressing the media, Sonu Nigam once again supported his own statement only to clarify every bit of the tweets he posted. Here are the statements from this recent press conference.
“I’m neither right wing or left wing. I’m somewhere in between. I’m a minority”
“My concern was social & not religious”
“Everyone has a right to voice opinion”
“My intention was not to hurt anyone’s religious sentiments”
“Being Secular means understanding each other’s problems and not saying ‘I am only right'”
“I will apologise if my tweets were ‘anti-Muslim'”
“Azaan zaroori hai, loudspeaker nahi.”
