During ComicCon, Adam Savage spoke about the yet to be aired Star Wars episode on his Discovery Channel program, Mythbusters. When he visited the set of Star Wars: he Force Awakens, he saw things revealing which can only mean one thing. SPOILERS AHEAD!
The effects used in the original films and the technology available today is extremely different. Clay may have been used to sculpt some of the creatures but the idea of 3D printing is being contemplated. Savage met Phil Tippett who designed the cretures for the original Star Wars trilogy.
Adam Savage has confirmed that Tippett has been hired for a special scene to be shot for the upcoming film as well. Savage confessed that he was able to guess that it was the chess scene with the weird creatures romping about on it. But, no modern technology will be used to create the scene as Savage saw the scene being shot himself in the classic old-school style.
