The first award instituted in the memory of late ghazal singer Jagjit Singh was presented to Tamil music maestro Ilaiyaraaja on Thursday, February 4, 2016. The award was presented by Jagjit Singh’s wife Chitra Jagjit Singh, also a singer and chairperson of the Jagjit Singh Foundation. Jagjit Singh passed away on October 10, 2011, and is still missed by his fans and the music fraternity for his incredible voice and its texture. As for Ilaiyaraaja, no words can describe the genius of the man who is praised by other legends like Amitabh Bachchan and many others. Ilaiyaraaja is also an instrumentalist, conductor, singer and lyricist. He is the early mentor of Oscar Award-winning maestro A R Rahman. Jasbir Singh Dham, Secretary of the Jagjit Singh Foundation, shared pictures on his Facebook of Ilaiyaraaja being given the award. Uttam Singh, Bollywood music director and a close associate of Ilaiyaraaja, was also present.
