The film is based on the life of a powerful don dwelling in the slums of Dharavi. The narrative revolves around him competing with a politician, essayed by none other than Nana Patekar. Post watching an early show, one of the fans wrote that he had never seen any star having such “Swag” such as megastar Rajinikanth had during a rain fight shot in the film. This is the second collaboration between Rajinikanth and filmmaker Pa Ranjith. Their first collaboration was in Kabali that too fared quite well at the Box Office. Kaala was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 140 crore and has reportedly already earned Rs 230 crore through its theatrical and music rights. The film has reportedly collected Rs 155 crore from theatrical rights, Rs 7o crore from broadcast rights and then Rs 5 crore from music rights. Kaala earned higher revenues from theatrical rights in states like Tamil Nadu (Rs 70 crore), Andhra Pradesh (Rs 33 crore) and Kerala (Rs 10 crore). The Hindustan Times has reported that the overseas rights have been sold at Rs 45 crore.
