Having gone a rung higher on the success ladder ever since its release, Anubhav Sinha-directorial Thappad, starring Taapsee Pannu in the lead, witnessed a slight increment on Thursday. Scrapping a meagre Rs 2.01 crore, the movie made a total of Rs 21.14 crore on the fifth day of its release. Sharing the dim numbers on his social media handle, Indian film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “#Thappad Fri 3.07 cr, Sat 5.05 cr, Sun 6.54 cr, Mon 2.26 cr, Tue 2.21 cr, Wed 2.01 cr. Total: ₹ 21.14 cr. #India biz.” On Monday and Tuesday, Thappad accumulated Rs 2.26 crore and Rs 2.21 crore, respectively. Helmed by Anubhav Sinha, Thappad hit the screens on February 28. Sinha’s directorial earned Rs 14.66 crore in the opening weekend. With this, Thappad has registered net box office collection of Rs 21 crore (approx) in total six days. Thappad has received good reviews and a terrific word of mouth on social media. The story has emerged out as something that was important to be told and Taapsee’s performance as housewife Amrita who decides to walk out of the marriage after her husband slaps her at a party, has impressed all. With Sinha’s newfound goodwill that he earned by making films like Mulk and Article 15 in the recent past, Thappad got an extra edge over other films currently running on the screens. Thappad is currently competing with Ayushmann Khurrana’s Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhaan at the box office.
The film revolves around domestic violence and it has managed to create a lasting impact on the audience. Thappad features a gripping storyline on a subject that has never been talked about in the mainstream cinema. The film narrates the story of a married couple played by Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati and the toll their marriage takes when the husband slaps his wife in a fit of rage. Things take a drastic turn with Taapsee refuses to make peace with the insult or the show of violence that she was subjected to.
