There’s a gripping story currently making waves on OTT — a suspenseful thriller that keeps viewers on edge till the very last frame. This two-hour-long film may seem slow at first, but its final 20 minutes are enough to leave you shocked and speechless. Packed with psychological tension, real-life emotions, and a haunting sense of dread, this film unfolds mostly in one location and over one night. What makes it even more unsettling is its subtle build-up, no loud background score, no over-the-top drama, just plain realism and raw intensity.
Here we are talking about ‘Ronth’, a Malayalam-language thriller directed by Shahi Kabir, now streaming on JioHotstar. The plot centers around two policemen, an experienced Sub-Inspector Yohannan (played by Dileesh Pothan) and a young constable Dinanath (played by Roshan Mathew), who are on night duty at a remote police station in Kerala. As the night unfolds, they face several disturbing incidents, each more intense than the last. From domestic disputes to mysterious missing person cases, each event chips away at their emotional and mental stability. The film explores not just crime, but how society, duty, and conscience can push even law enforcement to their breaking point.
The performances are the film’s biggest strength. Dileesh Pothan delivers a grounded, emotionally complex act, while Roshan Mathew complements him with restrained yet powerful emotions. Other notable performances include Lakshmi Menon, Kumaradas, and Rajesh Madhavan, each adding depth to the gritty narrative. The cinematography by Manesh Madhavan plays a crucial role in building the haunting atmosphere — using minimal lighting and realistic shots of Kerala’s silent roads and foggy nights. The subtle background score and tight editing make every moment feel real and tense.
The film reportedly had a modest budget, under Rs 5 crore, and managed to do well at the box office during its theatrical run before its OTT debut while amassing Rs 9.81 crore worldwide. Now on JioHotstar, it’s gaining praise for its gripping storytelling and raw realism, due to which it stands with rating of 7.4 on IMDb. If you’re looking for a psychological thriller with depth and atmosphere rather than jump scares, ‘Ronth’ is worth your time.
